Winter is the best time to look for sea glass, which used to be plentiful out here, but now requires the patience of Job to find. The best beaches for finding the smooth, jewel-like pieces are a well-kept secret, but I'd heard tell that Gin Beach - so named because bootleg booze was unloaded there during Prohibition - was the place. So we made our way over there this morning, and while the walk from Gin Beach towards Shagwong Point may not have yielded a treasure trove of glass, the solitary beauty of the wide winter beach on the Sound, next to the inlet for Lake Montauk, with its jetty and the view of Gosman's Dock from the south, was its own reward.
